Here and There

one of my favorite photos from our engagement session...I think it looks like a painting. Photo by Oz

1. I finished this book shortly after I posted about wanting to read it. It was really strange and sad. There were two specific things that left me feeling really weird. I don't have a child, but I found myself asking the question, "what would I do as a parent?" I feel like I would have completely different emotions reading the book if I had a child. I held my breath a lot in the beginning, but then felt like it lost a little momentum towards the very end. I would highly recommend it though. I want to say more but don't want to give anything away. Has anyone read it yet? I also need more recommendations now for some good reads ;)

2. I saw this guide online. It is about being an introvert. It seriously describes me to a T. Except I am probably not as introverted as I would have been if I hadnt worked in LA; being surrounded by the most extroverted people on a daily basis can make the most introverted person a little extroverted. I wish more people would take the time to understand different types of personalities.

3. The Walking Dead is back on. Stephen and I are beside ourselves.

4. I am attached to my hot water bottle like it is oxygen. I got it as a gift when I first arrived in England from my friends who live here in Scotland. It sat in my kitchen drawer for months because I had NO idea what the heck it was, and now I can't survive a winter without it.

5. I have been keeping up with The Bachelor. I know you were worried that I wasn't. Tierra definitely got crazy. I still really like AshLee and Desiree best, but I think AshLee seems a little too uptight/OCD for Sean? I love her as a person though. I love when the girls are all "omg Sean is so romantic...is this how it is always going to be?" Come on ladies..really? ABC is taking you these epic dates. Not Sean. They must know this, right? I didn't watch last nights season yet...don't tell me what happens.

6. I found this on ASOS and I really want it, but it's sold out. I want something pretty/simple for our little courthouse wedding here, but I am having a hard time finding something as cute as that now. I hate when that happens.

7. I watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower last night. I didn't read the book so had no idea what it was going to be about going into it, but I was totally surprised and blown away by how much I loved it. It was not what I was expecting.

9. I had made this for Stephen for Valentines day. It took me a lifetime to figure out the web program that put it together. I also may have given it to him early, because I have no self control.

8. Speaking of Valentines day,  Jigsaw London is offering an additional 20% off sale items right now for Valentines day with the code  AcrossThePond3996 . Jump on that. I have been eyeing this sweater for awhile. Sale code ends tomorrow.

  2. Megan,

My hubs and I were so excited about seeing the new episode last night. Its one of the shows we like watching together since watching the Bachelor is more my thing. ;) I will have to check out the Perks of being a Wallflower film, I have been wanting to see it for a while. Thank you for the mention and review.

  5. I can't wait to watch Perks of Being a Wallflower! My husband is making me dinner for Valentine's Day on Friday (our tradition), and then we're going to watch it. I was waiting for it to finally be released so I decided to read the book while I waited. I was blown away. I thought it was the absolute best book I have read in a long while. I thought about it for a long time afterwards. It will probably be my go to recommendation for awhile.

    1. It is a great film. I dont know how it compares to the book though. You will have to let me know if they did a good job with it.

    2. I'll let you know. I know the author also directed it (when does that ever happen??), so I imagine it stays fairly true to the book. I pictured Emma Watson the whole time while reading it. I love her!

  6. I really want to see the Perks of Being a Wallflower- I've heard so many good things about it.

And yes to AshLee on the Bachelor. I think she's the prettiest one, but she's too good for Sean. I think wedding dress girl will win. They're at the same brain level. ha.

And I love your v-day gift to Stephen. That's such a sweet idea.

Hope you have a good day, love :)

  7. Ahh I saw the Perks of Being a Wallflower a few weeks ago. At first I thought 'hmm this is good, but I'm not hooked', and then I was blown away by the ending. Need to read the book!

  8. Room! AH! I read it when my daughter was nine months old or so, and I could not breathe for at least the first half. I don't want to be the one who spoils it so I'll just say that the one part where you're waiting to find out WILL IT HAPPEN OMG OMG OMG I literally had a panic attack and had to put the book down. Needless to say, it's WAY hard reading it when you have a kid.

  9. Your description of "Room" is exactly on point. I would definitely recommend it because I thought it was fascinating, but it was just so strange and upsetting sometimes. I definitely felt that it lost momentum midway through, and I ended it with so many unanswered questions. I hate books like that, but I love books that don't necessarily end happily. Weird, I know.

And oh.my.gosh I got addicted to The Walking Dead about two weeks ago. Zach and I got completely caught up through all three seasons in about a week and a half. I have a TV problem. I already can't wait until next Sunday!!

    1. I am with you. I sorta like books to not always have the stereotypical happy ending (maybe im just morbid? ;) )

walking dead. SO GOOD. I was hooked before i met stephen. I knew he would love it so I made him watch the first season awhile ago and now he is obsessed.

  10. I read Room just a couple of weeks ago, and WHOA. It really got me thinking, and I followed Wikipedia and news links for several hours after. Now I'm interested in Jaycee Dugard's book, whereas before I felt like reading it would be rubbernecking and skeevy up in her business.
When I was working outside in the winter there, I'd stuff my hot water bottle between my innermost thermal layers. My coworkers would tease me (since it made me look pregnant) and ask when I was due- I told them in the Spring. But seriously, that thing lasted and kept me warm! My sister's two kids want to be in saunas while they sleep, so after she visited I sent them hot water bottles and now she puts those in the beds with them instead of having to pile more blankets on them. Hot water bottles are great!
Oh, and I got two ceramic Victorian ones at a car boot sale for about £3 each- they're pretty cool, although (obviously) solid-shaped. But if you ever go to car boot sales, look for them! I've had a bunch of people here threaten to steal mine already. NOPE.

  13. I feel like I read the Perks of being a Wallflower, but I have no recollection of what it's about. I guess I should check out the movie. I am an introvert to the T. My hubby is an extrovert, so we balance each other out, but at the same time it can be a little rough.

  14. I just purchased the Perks of Being a Wallflower book because I kept hearing about how great it was. Maybe you can add that to your "too read" list, it is pretty short though (200-ish pages) and will be a fairly quick read.

    1. I am sorta mad at myself I didnt read it first now. I really thought it was just some teenage comedy? I should of read up on it. stupid.

    2. That is exactly what I thought, which is why it took me so long to go out and purchase it. I was surprised to find out it was soo much more than that. Needless to say I cried like a baby.

  15. LOVE the book for Stephen... I would also have caved in and given it to him early :) Also, I also didn't have a clue what a hot water bottle was before moving to SA... funny how the rest of the world seems to do things universally different from the States.

  17. That hair brooch is so pretty, it's such a shame that it's sold out!!! As for book recommendations, I'm currently reading HHhH which is really good, but I always love recommending Suite Francaise to people (hi, my name is Alice and I'm a history nerd!), because it's just lovely. Good Reads is seriously useful for book recommendations too, if you don't already use it! x

  22. I recently produced a radio tour for a book called Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, basically about how introverts are underrated in our society. I totally related to it and found it kind of made sense of some of my reactions to certain things about living in Italy as an American.

Also, I just finished reading Perks of Being a Wallflower since I never read it in high school and it was great!! I can't wait to watch the movie now.

On another note: I'm sorry to hear about your wedding. I'm sure things will absolutely work out as they should and there won't be any regrets in the end. I'm dating an Italian with hopes of moving both of us to the U.S. within the next year so I'm always interested in hearing how others with similar stories work all the details out. I wish the best for the two of you! And your engagement pictures are absolutely gorgeous!!

  23. A suggestion for your reading list: Quiet; The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. A wonderful book about our culture of personality (which prizes outgoing personalities over other traits like hard-working, trustworthy, etc). I thought it was fascinating and gave some really great tips on how to communicate with a partner or child who introverted.

I wrote a review about it here, if you're interested. I have some other must-read books there on my reading list too. Hope it's helpful.

  24. I'm a little over halfway through with Room! Still waiting for it to pick up though! Going to push through it and then we can discuss :). Tierra is crazy -- I think she has to be top crazy Bachelor contestant ever. I actually really like Catherine for him, I loved their snow date. I like AshLee alot but think she'd be a great Bachelorette. I still have to catch up on last nights too though.

  25. i read room. it's kinda indescribable. but worth the read, like you said. anywho. your next, or next-next, book should be life of pi. it's my fave of all time. it's so beautifully written, and an incredible story. and do it before you watch the movie (also incredible btw). hope it's not too late. happy reading.

  26. It's so funny that you wrote about The Perks of Being a Wallflower because I just wrote a book review for it. I haven't seen the movie yet but I finished the book a few days ago and it was soooo good I finished it in two days. You totally need to read the book now!

  27. The Perks of Being a Wallflower was so good, I was very impressed with how well they were able to capture to book on film. So much can get lost in the process of the adaptation. You should read the book if you ever have the chance, it's very good, though sad, but worth reading!

  28. I just finished both Room and Perks of being a Wallflower. I'm itching to get my hands on the Wallflower movie cause I LOVE Emma Watson. I found Room really sad but totally felt the same you did. I was anxious for them to be saved and then once that happened I found it slow. Good luck with the wedding accessories search. I bet you could find something similar on Etsy ;) x

  30. Isn't a hot water bottle just the greatest thing in winter?! A friend introduced them to me when I moved to London. I don't know why they haven't caught on in the US yet. I love mine!

Gorgeous photo of you and S!

  31. So I read some of "Room" after you mentioned it. I had to return it to the library. I'm sure it is a great read, but it was too upsetting for me. That's my mommy perspective...it was just too much for me. Of course I also started it when I was on my "lady time" so maybe it was bad timing too. ;)

  32. ahhhhhhghrrrgh, "Room" basically made me want to curl up into the fetal position and nurse the Bean until he was five. I actually just thought about re-reading it again, on the airplane. Glad I didn't make that mom-going-on-vacation-for-the-first-time rookie mistake:-) Instead, I re-read "The Brothers Karamazov." (I like to appear somewhat intelligent when I sit in business class:-) xoxo

  36. I had read Room about a year ago and cried a lot. At that point I honestly would never know what to do in that situation. I also really want to read Perks of Being a Wallflower but I kinda just want to watch the movie instead.

  37. Read the book ("Perks of Being a Wallflower"). It is so good that I am actually terrified to watch the movie because I'm scared it'll ruin the book for me.
