Monthly Goals...but not...

via

So after reading my friend Bridget's post,
which led me to Elizabeth's post,
along with everyone elses' post,
I was all set to plan out my new years resolutions.
I was going to set one goal a month,
and I would meet those goals,
and life would be perfect.

But to be honest guys,
and this may be due to the fact that I haven't seen daylight in five days,
I am pretty sure my brain is melting.

We are still so jet lagged up in here,
sleeping during the day,
up the whole night...
I can barely differentiate between days let alone plan my goals for the next 12 months.

However,
there is an overarching goal I have for 2013.

It hit me when I was in LA...
this resolution...
while I was having dinner with one of my good friends.

You know those moments where someone says something to you,
and you may have heard it a thousand times before,
but for some reason,
this time it smacks you right in the face?
You get chills...
your eyes tear up...
Because all of a sudden it all made sense?
This was one of those moments for me.

There is so much pain in this world we have no control over,
like death or disease...

But there is pain we do have control over in our own lives...

Not going back to an ex who treats you poorly,
not allowing toxic people in your life be it friends, or even family.
Not participating in situations that you know will have a negative outcome.
Starting arguments,
talking poorly about others,
allowing people to talk poorly about you,
giving into petty drama or manipulation...

For 2013 I want to make a conscious effort to not allow pain that I have control over enter my life.

This is my goal.
What is your big overarching goal?

  1. That's a good one and something I've been working on too! The more you let all of that stuff go, the more peace you feel. That's what I'm learning so far. I love those moments though, you described them perfectly :)

  2. really really good goal Megan! I have to agree with all you said. I especially was happy to rid of those 'toxic' people in my life about 3-4 years ago, and my how has it made a difference in my overall happiness. Of course it's a never ending battle and I am always going to have pain, but I should never let it control my life.
    thanks for the reminder :)

  3. I loooove that goal, and most definitely isn't as easy as it sounds. I find that resolutions are sooo overwhelming, I honestly don't think I've ever *really* successfully accomplished one. (But I mean... considering the statistics on those darn things, I don't think I'm alone here)

For me, this year is all about feeling and adjusting internally, which is why I chose words to guide me, rather than some ridiculous to-do list that makes me look like an over-achiever. (When it actually makes me prefer curling up underneath the blankets instead hahaha)

  4. I love this. It is so true that so much of the pain that occurs in our life is often brought on by ourselves. I do try and be positive but gosh darn it's hard sometimes. I think my goal is to really live while I'm in Italy and to break down as many boundaries as I can. :)

  5. i love this goal and should probably add it to my list of resolutions and intentions which seem to be growing every day.

i suppose my over arching themes are to not doubt but listen to my gut and also just to be thankful--big ones which hopefully will last for the whole year, we shall see :)

  6. yeeesh!
Also 'sleepless in London'. Been home for exactly one week and the Jet lag hasn't subsided. Up from 230am until 830am and then slept until 1pm. This is AWWWWFUL!!!!

  7. I have set the same goal for myself this year! I think it is much better than a weight loss or some other goal with which we will end up letting ourselves down anyway. This goal will be much more rewarding for us! I want to especially rid my life of toxic people!
Good luck with it and I hope you have a great start into the new year ... once the jetlag wears off. I came back from Germany on Thursday and while it may not be as bad going this way, I am still waking up at all hours of the night.

  8. Wonderful goal! I'm focusing on that myself this year and now allowing myself to become overwhelmed with the FOREVER part of a resolution. If I can just be a little bit better today than I was yesterday and a little better tomorrow than I am today, it will result in measurable and healthy growth. It also helps me to focus on one moment, one conversation, one thought at a time. Don't stress about thinking something negative five minutes from now; just be the best person I can be to myself and those around me RIGHT NOW.

2013 is going to be a great year!

  10. My goal? To dominate every single thing I do this year. No exceptions.

  11. That is such a good goal, I might have to adopt it as a resolution of my own. I also really like your one goal a month idea.

  12. I have a couple goals for this year -- but I would have to go along the same lines as you and say that my #1 goal for 2013 is positivity. Enough with the negative! In with happiness and an optimistic outlooks!

  13. Wow - I am so sorry that you guys are time/travel impaired, but I am so glad you inked out this post because it is exactly what I needed to hear (read) at the end of this particularly challenging day... Thanks so much and I will pray you and Stephen get your internal clocks back on track STAT! Sorry - I have been a nurse for 20 years - couldn't resist! Thanks again and many BLESSINGS! Tessa

PS I bet the emotions of leaving your loved ones exacerbates the whole night and day thing - but this is YOUR YEAR and it will be so worth it!

  14. My goal is to be more mindful of what I do and say. I think that encompasses a lot: perpetuating positive, confident thoughts about myself (instead of being my own worst critic), watching what I say about other people, living in the present (putting away that technology), etc.

  15. I think this is an absolutely WONDERFUL goal! I have loved reading your blog and I think you deserve nothing but a life full of positivity and happiness!!!! I have to say---your family made ME smile numerous times over the holidays with your holiday video! That masterpiece was absolutely amazing! I'm waiting for Ellen Degeneres to discover it so I can see you on her show and point and yell "Hey! I read her blog!!!!!" :)
Seriously though--- I hope that 2013 brings you many moments of happiness and joy---and very few moments of negativity and hurt. I mean--you're having THE MOST FABULOUS wedding of the year---so that should take you pretty far :)

  16. The neat SW that is an anti-personnel gun, that's, it's a good idea utilized to preserve select points and even push foes GW2 gold, swtor credits, wow gear removed from throughways. It could possibly toss arrow trolley, serious arrows together with barbed arrows. It does the vast majority of it has the injury alongside players (never properties), hence be wary with when and where people install this particular duress trolley.

  17. This is so great Megan! It's true we really do have more control than we give ourselves credit for and I think this a goal I'm going to adapt for myself too if you don't mind. Thanks for sharing! -jb.

  18. Goodness, I don't know if I have one that can even come close to yours, but if I were to pick I would probably say to start every day as a fresh and fun challenge. Turning negativity into positivity and improving the lives of those around me in the process. Those are probably my biggest goals.
