Monogamy Monday-Hair and Makeup...and me venting

Hair and makeup is really important for the big day,
both of them drastically change the outcome of your photos.
The makeup needs to be slightly heavier than usual so that it picks up the light just right,
and the camera catches it,
and your face looks flawless.

With the right hair,
makeup,
and photography,
you are destined for beautiful photos.
Which is what you want...
I hope.
Right?

Not all makeup artists are good,
same with hair dressers,
and I am slightly/really particular.

I am dying a little bit on the inside because I have such talented friends at home (in cali) who do either hair or makeup.

Finding someone in N.Ireland has turned into a much more difficult process than I had thought.

I have been quoted really high numbers,
only to find out later that they usually charge clients half of the price they quoted me.
I am talking $600+ for hair and makeup.

The other night I got really frustrated,
and totally angry tweeted (fail)
because a lady,
after talking to me on the phone,
e mailed me the next day with a really high quote,
that did not include blow drying hair,
assumed I wanted an up do without asking,
and was going to charge me $75 extra to come to the venue location that was around the corner from the shop.

I thought maybe I was crazy,
and that these were just her regular prices...
but I just had this feeling she was lieing.

So then Stephen called around town
(my hero)
and asked different salons, and our venue, what this woman usually charges...
it was half the price she quoted me.

All of that stupid stuff to say,
I think we found someone for hair
because I used Stephen and his accent to make the calls instead.
Actually he just went and did it on his own.
I know,
he kills me with how amazing he is sometimes.

I am pretty sure I am having my hair down,
styled in a specific way...
but then sometimes I just love those loose flowy up-dos that will probably last longer than my hair looking good down...
These are the big life dilemmas people.

but I'm curious...
hair up or down for weddings?

ps
I have a big announcement on Wednesday...so if you weren't planning on coming back to this blog, now you kinda have to, because everyone knows when someone says they have news and wont tell you what it is right then you HAVE to find out. muahaha.

  1. they charge an insane amount for hair and makeup here too! just because it's a wedding, of course. i'm doing my own makeup (scary) but i've been practicing. i just really want to have something that only i can control that day. but i'll get my hair done, updo, so i'm not touching it all the time. you are GORGE so i'm positive you'll look great no matter what!

    1. this whole post has made me start to second guess how i want my hair. hahaha. Now im thinking down for the ceremony and outdoor photos and then it will probably look like a mess after and have it pinned loosely up for the reception??

    2. ps i am SO excited to see your photos!!

  2. That's really frustrating!! Hope you get a good price in the end. I love beautiful up dos's but think I'd want my hair down a bit - like a half up half down thing? With lots of curls hanging and framing my face.

    1. I always, always prefer my hair down....but in the same token it doesnt hold curl well...so maybe do down for the ceremony and photos and up for the reception? i have seen some really pretty half up half down styles recently. there was one on once.wed

  3. Oh the Up or Down question --- I love when brides wear their hair down. But with that being said, I wore mine up... my hair does not like to hold a style longer than an hour and I figured that wouldn't change on my wedding day.

And that really sucks about the misquotes --- it's an awful feeling being ripped off. I was ripped off on the daily while living in Gabon - my blazing white skin colour and my terrible French accent made it too darn easy. Glad you had S to save the day (and the $$.)

  4. Gosh that is so much to charge for hair! I was torn between hair down or up...I went for a relaxed up do - a low side bun - and am glad I did in the end because I didn't have to worry about flat hair, my curls dropping etc. However, you also have gorgeous long hair...so you should show it off! Maybe it depends on the style of your dress? Anything you choose will be just beautiful anyway.

    1. see now i am re-thinking this whole thing, because my hair does not hold a style for a long time when down..maybe a few hours max. But i really prefer my hair down, especially in photos. So maybe wear it down for the ceremony and photos and then have it put up loosly like you did for the reception so i dont have to worry about it?

  5. That is so irritating!! I know people in England tend to hear my American accent and talk to me like I'm either 1) really stupid or 2) about to bite their heads off, but I've never had anyone do something that drastic!!
After much up/down debate, my hair is going to be down for my wedding. I'm so worried that my hair will fall straight but I've done some test runs and they turned out better than expected!

  6. Ah no girl. I am so sorry!! i hate it when people do that... All suppliers hear the word wedding and just up their prices!!
I think the hair depends on the person and bride - I am going with down curls for you x

  7. What a bia***!!! That lady's just crazy. I mean, hair is indeed more stupidly expensive than it needs to be anyway, but I understand the time and effort a good stylist will put in to ensure you look gorrrgeous! :)

I say hair up for the bride. It might seem a bit old fashioned, but I was wishy-washy on this, too and and am now so glad I went with an up-do. I just knew with it up and sprayed+bobby-pinned like crazy, I didn't have to worry about hugging a guest and it getting pulled, getting cake on it {yep, seen it happen}, or any other fiascos that could befall hair as long as yours and mine. But I did have a super fun, loose up-do that didn't feel stuffy and too "bridal," and I still adore it.

  8. That's the worst!! Geez! Well you will look gorgeous no matter what, but luckily you have someone with an accent handy. And I totally have the up/down dilemma (I'm not getting married anytime soon haha. Just bored.) But I think having it up keeps it outta the way and looking gorgeous all day.

  9. That sounds really frustrating... And those prices are ridiculous. No way would I pay $600 for hair or makeup. I'm still trying to figure out if I want mine up or down. I'm leaning towards down, but we'll see. Glad you got everything figured out :)

  10. WHAT?! I can't believe she did that! As an American, I'm totally hurt by this! That someone would try to scam you like that. Urgh! So sorry!

Hair up, I say! But do whatever you envision in your head.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Scamming foreigners is the same all over the world, unfortunately :( So great of Stephen to step up and sort it out for you...I have to do the same over here with all sorts of things! I'd be so torn on the up/down dilemma too...both are so beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  12. why's she doing that?! how frustrating.

my brother in law's sister in law -- that was a mouthful -- wore her hair up for the ceremony and down for the party. it was pretty awesome. i think i liked it down better overall. but yeah, there are some dreamy updos.

    ReplyDelete
  13. such bullshit that they're charging you double for being a foreigner! it's rude.

and I did half up, half down, done by my sister and fixed throughout the night by my sister. except after we danced in the pouring rain, I just took the frizzy mess down and let nature take its course.

    ReplyDelete
  14. How extremely unfair that they would double prices based on your accent. I always think hair down is really pretty but it may not last as long depending upon your hair and the weather.

    1. I am trying to be understanding now...I mean i guess i cant knock them for trying to make some extra cash...but i'm a little annoyed at this point only because a lot of vendors have been doing this, not just hair and makeup ones. but i think i am slowly figuring out how to get around it. aka have stephen call. lol. And you are 100% right about hair and weather..i may have it pinned up after photos (which will of course will be out doors and could lead to me looking like a mess after...it is the UK afterall....

    1. right? and I agree! i love my hair down most...but might pin it up (like i said a hundred times above in the comments..lol) for the reception to get it out of my face..and itll probably look a mess by then anyway

  16. Ugh, that would drive me crazy! How sweet of Stephen to help out with the task so you don't get ripped off. I love the idea of hair down for a wedding, depending on the dress. Though the updo in that picture is gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would love to wear my hair down, but I have an open back dress that I want to accentuate, and plus, like you said, I just think an up-do will hold up better - especially if I encounter humidity in Mexico!

    ReplyDelete
  18. you have such gorgeous hair it'll look great up or down! good luck!

  19. If it makes you feel better, I just booked my makeup for my august wedding at it was $225 USD. (includes airbrushing, individual false eyelashes and waterproof coating...because lord knows I'm gonna cry!!) I havent booked my hair yet, but I imagine it will be around $80-$100. Not sure if it will be an updo or down yet though. Leaning towards 1/2 up since that seems like a compromise! :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Gosh, it would totally depend on the style of your wedding and your dress, but I would lean towards down for you (and pull up mid way through reception somehow?). What did you do the first time around? Do the opposite, I'd think...just because.
    I'm no help am I.
My hair was up in a tiara back in 2002 because that was what everyone did. But, I'd definitely do the loose curl/romantic no veil look now.
You could wear a baseball cap and look gorgeous, so you can't go wrong. OK...that's a little extreme. Please don't wear a baseball cap.

    1. lol you are so sweet. thank you!! I think, after reading through the comments, and giving it some thought, down for the ceremony and photos then pulled up to the reception.

  21. that is really shitty he had to do that for you. I mean it was nice he did but you shouldn't have had to! I would be pretty upset about it too :(
As for me, I went hair up for our wedding because I knew if it was down I would be messing with it all night. It was up, out of my way and wasn't a nusiance at all!

  22. Hi, I am a new follower:) Ah this brings back so many memories for me from planning the wedding--I think the hair might have been the most stressful part, so I feel you!! When I had my hair trial I had them do it down but right before the wedding at my last dress fitting, I changed my mind! I went with it up. I ended up being really happy with it because it was out of the way the whole night. (Its on the "our wedding" page of my blog at onlythepicture.blogspot.com). I recommend going with whichever is the most comfortable:) Either way you will look beautiful!

  23. Holy cow 600 buckaroos for hair and makeup?!?1 So glad your man is amazing and swooped in to save the day. I wore my hair up because it doesn't hold the lose victoria secret curls like i always hope it will and it was easy as pie. but your hair is like victoria secret hair, so i'm sure your's will hold! ANNNDDDD you could throw on a turbin half-way through the wedding and still be beautiful. problem solved. wear a turbin. your welcome!

ps - did i mention how BEAUTIFUL you will be on your wedding day?

pps- cant wait to hear the news! xox

  24. i did my own makeup (bad idea) and had a terrible hair person (seriously, could have done it myself). needless to say, i wish i had researched a bit more and had taken the time to find quality people for this. hair and makeup make you as gorgeous as your dress. not that you could get any prettier :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would have croaked if I heard those prices. As for the undo vs. down debate, I recently had my wedding and ending up hating my hair. I wanted a loose undo and gave her specific pictures of how I wanted it. However, I was sick that day and just didn't feel like arguing with her. (Yes, of all days, I was horribly sick the whole day and following night of my wedding. Awesome). But, I wished I would have told her to redo it because I was so unhappy with it... But, since I was so sick I just wanted to leave the salon. The combination of nausea and hairspray does not go well. Needless to say, I truly regret it. Make sure you get what style you want. I think your hair would be gorgeous down...

  26. I wore mine down for the ceremony and then loosely pinned for the reception, it was the best decision ever because it was 92 that day and an outdoor wedding. Also, I just loved having two different looks for pictures. You're not the only one that obsesses over stuff like this...I literally had nightmares about my hair not looking good for the wedding, I told my hair girl and we did three trials just to make sure everything went well the day of. Good luck, you will look beautiful no matter what!

  27. Hair and makeup is one of my biggest issues right now...I'm having a hard time finding people that I can trust to refer clients to, and they do charge so much, even here! I can only imagine what it's like there. I'm glad you found someone though, and I know you'll be gorgeous on your wedding day regardless ;) xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  28. i ad my hair up as i had a veil and otherwise it wouldn't stay in...also i would have loved curls but my hair is heavy and so by the evening it would have looked like i had had nothing done.

and i did my own akeup in the end because everyone seemed to want me to look like a drag queen and i could barely recognise myself :)

  29. I'm trying to decide on the whole hair up or down matter. I'm planning to do a birdcage veil, so I wonder if one way looks better with the smaller veil option. Thoughts??

You'll look absolutely stunning - hair up, hair down, hair in a mohawk. Whatev. You're gorgeous!

    1. Ah such a hard decision! with the birdcage veil i think you can really go either way...up or down. However i think i tend to like a birdcage viel with the hair pulled up and back..could still be loose..but i think it fits more with the whole vibe of the veil

  30. I would do a loose up do like the first one, at least thats what I would do, because my hair would fall and loose the pretty curl throughout the day. That stinks about the lady and the high quote. That happens to me here in Norway too. Not cool! -Heidi http://fabricandfrosting.blogspot.no/

  31. Gah - prices are crazy! I wore my hair up for my wedding because my hair doesn't hold any kind of curl and just looks yucky down. {yucky, I'm totally a grown up}. My friend wore hers down, and it looked nice, but only for about the first 30 minutes. I'd vote for us. Out of your face & will look great for hours and hours.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well now that I know she did that intentionally makes me a little hot under the collar. That's pretty cruel to double just because you're American. I'm glad you found someone for your hair and he really is quite the guy taking charge like that.

In my infinite wisdom, I say hair up. I think after awhile having it down will lose its shape and go flat and with all that you'll be doing, having it up could be nice to a)have it off your neck and out of your face (ultimately) and b) with all the hugging, it'll keep people from yanking on it making it flatter quicker. That's what the veil is for..to be yanked on with all the hugs. ;)

  33. Stephen for the win. He's great. Wow, that's frustrating, though! You'll be beautiful- hair up or down :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. how rude that they would charge you double just for being an american! that is not fair. stephen is amazing for calling around for you. that is so sweet! i think you would look great with your hair down or up. i personally would want mine down for the ceremony and pictures and then up for the reception because then it can't get messed up, in your face or food, and it will be nicer to dance with. also, there is nothing worse than when people take pictures with you, put their arm around you and get their jewelry caught in your hair. it really hurts. but then again, things like that usually only happen to me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would have loved to wear my hair down, but with how poorly it holds curls, the humidity and knowing I would probably play with it more if it was down than if it was up, it was an easy decision for me. I secretly envy the girls that can pull of the hair-down look for a wedding!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wear your hair how you most feel comfortable - less to worry about (key for a wedding day)! At least in my case, I knew my hair would be a mess from crazy dancing by the end of the reception anyway, so didn't stress about it not holding a style haha.

  38. In Cyprus, as soon as you say wedding, the price instantly triples. And the quality of the hair and make up artists here is upsetting when you factor in the prices.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I did an updo, (especially since it was a hot summer wedding and my hair is like that of a thoroughbred horse), and yes, it fell out a little bit around 9PM as we were dancing BUT I loved it! Just shows how much fun we had on the dance floor:-) xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yeah, wow. I can't believe you've had to deal with that kind of insane price gouging! So crazy. Stephen is an angel.

As far as how to wear your hair, I'd say it depends on the dress, but also whatever makes you feel good. For my wedding, I wore it up during the ceremony and then a little bit into the reception I decided to "let my hair down"(get it? So corny, I know.), so I took the pins out and wore it down the rest of the evening. Because my hair had been pinned when I took it down it had some real nice volume and curl to it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. WOW! get serious!!!! that is soo rude! ugg, one of the most lame things about being a foreigner. And what' even more frustrating is that we're not tourists just passing through! we live here! Don't treat us like tourists you can take advantage of!

    ReplyDelete
  42. That is so frustrating! I wore my hair up & loose for the ceremony & took it down for the reception. It had tons of volume since it had been curled & was pinned. And I took my veil off for the reception. Whatever makes you feel the best! And think of how you would like your hair for the pictures too.

  43. I just got your freaking gorgeous wedding invite... prettiest I've ever seen.

And you, my dear, cannot go wrong, updo or downdo. :) Personally I like updos for weddings, just because it's more unusual and how often do you get someone to make you look like a Victorian princess or some shiz?! Never, that's how often!

    ReplyDelete
  44. i had my MOH do my hair, and while i loved the price, i ended up a little sad about what was going on with my bangs up front.. OH WELL, right? but no.. it still irks me to look at allllllll these gorgeous photos, and then my hair is fucking it up.

annnywayyyy.... i think it depends on your dress. how did you wear your hair the first time around? i don't know, but i'm thinking i like the first picture for hair.. and even make up...

    GOOD LUCK!

  45. That is very frustrating! It was the same for me while we were in Peru, taxi drivers wanted to charge us more than double for the same cab ride if he heard me speaking in English before the fare price had been agreed on. So I quickly learned to just be quiet until we were in the car on our way to where we were going and let Mike handle it so we weren't charged so much! Frustrating, but I'm also very thankful hat Mike just handles stuff when he is needed!

For your hair, I don't think you could go wrong either way- I do like your idea of having it down for the ceremony and then loosely pulled up for the reception. If it were me, I'd want my hair out of my face so I could really get down on the dance floor....lol.
