On Family

I love seeing my family with Stephen.

When everything went down a couple years ago with my ex and I,
I knew it would be difficult to bring someone new into the fold.
They had spent five years getting used to someone,
and watched the whole thing crumble.
I knew they could possibly be more guarded when I met someone else,
especially when that someone else would be keeping their daughter/sister away from them for longer than they had expected.
AND imagine the worry when they couldn't even meet that person in real life,
and I was dropping everything (jobs, friends, family, weather) to be with him.

Looking back,
I am pretty amazed by my little family.
Sure my mom expressed a little concern,
Shane had his reservations,
friends said I was going too fast,
but in hindsight,
they really handled things with a lot of grace and support.

Then they met Stephen,
and they saw us interact,
and it only took 5 seconds for them to get on board wholeheartedly.

Seeing Shane and Stephen play for hours in the ocean,
just the two of them,
or S and my mom have a cup of coffee together in the mornings before Shane and I are up...
Sometimes S will stay downstairs at night to have a glass of wine with my mom while I head to bed.
It all just sort of melts my heart for so many reasons.

They constantly affirm him and tell him how much they love him,
how they are so excited for our wedding,
how they are so happy for us...
They make sure he is well fed, taken care of, comfortable, happy...
it just really makes me appreciate this family I have all the more.

I am really lucky and thankful.

  1. I LOVE IT!! I'm so glad your family is excited for you and Stephen. My family LOVES my husband, probably more than they like me. It's super nice to have people be SO supportive of your relationship, even if it is just because they'd rather keep the other person than you... the person they are actually related to.

Whatever... I'll take what I can get. At least now I know if they want him around, they have to have me too. :)

  10. It sure does melt the heart, I tell ya. Before Luke, I had an ex that didn't want to be around my family, he only wanted to be around his. It broke my heart & I knew that it wasn't going to work out with him unless he loved & respected my family, too. Now my parents treat Luke like the son they never had, they even chat on the phone and text & all that stuff that family does :) I'm SO HAPPY that you have that, too!!!! He's def a keeper!

  16. That is so great to hear, and I love it because my family is the same way with my boyfriend! It's wonderful to look at them and think, "I could definitely see us all having Christmas dinner together 20 years from now and having a blast."

SO happy for you to have those wonderful people in your life!

  17. Nothing could be more true. I am very close to my family and they HATED a guy I dated for 5 years (because of how he treated me). It was the hardest situation and I was always so torn. I am dating someone now who my family loves and it is such a great feeling and makes everything so much happier.. for everyone! Stephen looks like part of the fam!

  18. I know I rarely ever comment, but I've been following for a very long time and I know that you and Stephen deserve to be flooded with the love of your family. I also have this idea that since my family is really Irish (McAuley), Stephen and I are probably (read: hopefully) related and thus we are going to be related once you get married.

But really, I am so happy for you! And, I think your and Stephen's story is just beautiful.

  19. this pretty much brought tears to my eyes. i just got engaged last week and when my mom came to visit this weekend to celebrate i just took a step back to see my fiance (!) and her interact. it was so natural, and loving, and comfortable. it was the most amazing thing ever. and to see him with my brother and dad is just the icing on the cake! they all have inside jokes, and laugh all of the time, and hang out when i'm not around. i have no doubt that each person will care for my guy as one of their own. and that makes me feel like the luckiest.

  20. I didn't realize how much he and your bro look alike until I saw this picture. He fits right in! Also, from everything you've said about Stephen, how could they not love him? :)

  21. meg- i hope your bridal shower was as special as you- i'm not sure why the world never wants me to see you, but i will be at your wedding or whatever party you decide to throw in the states... mark my words. i know we likely won't have time to see one another with your hectic schedule, but i want you to know that even after years of not seeing you (and our survival of the tan festival), you're still a very close friend of mine. perhaps it's our ability to write novels that are seemingly endless and touch on every topic imaginable, or maybe it's that neither of us is very judgmental. i've always valued our friendship, and after everything you've gone through not just with colin, but well before that in life, i truly admire your character. i still read here when i get a chance, and i can't wait to finally meet steven. just from photos alone, i can tell how happy he makes you- and you deserve that more than most anyone. i'm so happy that you're getting some sun, family time, and your beloved junk food i'm sure. much love always, britt

  22. this is so wonderful!

my mom and dad and I went to a Christmas party on Saturday night, and I overheard a family friend ask my mom what she thought of Jon. Mom didn't know I was standing right behind her, and my heart burst when she answered. it's really magical how families can be so encompassing.

(also I'm glad you included "weather" in that list... haha!)

  23. Your family sounds just like mine. Seriously, they call my hubby more than me. I love that they love him. It just gives me a silly happy smile. Pretty much reaffirms that I picked the perfect guy for me. We are so lucky to have my family, especially since the hubby's family is the opposite : (.

  27. Your family is so beautiful! I'm so glad they're on board. I'm one of those people who wouldn't feel like I was making the right choice if my family wasn't on board.
