Almost 27 years ago this lady pushed me out of her womanly parts.
She calls me every year on February 15th to let me know that on that very night, however many years ago,
I was conceived.
Thanks mom.
I like to pay tribute to my mom twice a year on this space...
on mothers day,
and today,
her birthday.
This year,
I would like to tell you a little bit about my mom.
My mom has always been a hard worker ever since she was a little girl.
She came from very humble beginnings along with her four brothers and sister.
She has worked for big time companies like Paramount,
and jobs to make ends meet.
My mom became a stay at home mother when I was born,
and she remained a SAHM for the next 15 years for my brother and I.
I am so thankful for this.
Life would have been a lot different,
and not in a good way,
if my mom had not stayed home with Shane and I growing up.
Then after 15 years of not having an 'out-of-the-home' job,
and no college degree,
she was forced back into the work field.
She did whatever she had to do to help our family.
She went and got her cosmetology license and worked part time in a salon doing nails,
and the other half of the time worked out of our home.
I can imagine, now, what a blow to her ego that must have been.
What she must have felt like in our middle-upper class suburban neighborhood.
What she must have felt like in our middle-upper class suburban neighborhood.
But her friends, my best friends moms,
were loyal to her.
They would pay to get their nails done,
and my friends would all go to my mom for their nails,
and to confide in her about their dramatic teenage life happenings.
My mom took computer classes so that she could learn the new ways of the Internet,
and she went back to school,
at 40 years of age,
to finish her degree.
She eventually got hired at what used to be Country Wide
as an admin assistant.
She worked hard,
studying, working 9-5, and taking care of Shane and I.
When Bank of America bought out Country Wide during the the worst of the recession,
and thousands of people lost their jobs,
my mom was the only one in her department to be kept on.
She was moved around and was constantly uncertain if she would have a job to go back to the next day,
but executives wanted her,
needed her,
adored her,
and made sure she was never out of the job.
It has been a long road,
and now at 50 something (sorry mom, I am concealing the age somewhat, it's part of the story)
she has completed her AA and is one class away from getting her BA.
She is higher up in her company and constantly referred to as,
"the woman who knows everything"
by fellow employees.
She has continued to fiercely love and support Shane and I,
making sure we never wanted for anything,
helped us follow our passions,
and is the sole reason my brother and I have turned out the way we have...
embodying many good and wonderful traits..
I digress.
She did it all by herself,
during the most horrific and difficult of circumstances,
and has come out on top.
I couldn't be more proud.
I love you Mom.
Happy Birthday.

ReplyDeleteAwww happy birthday to your mom! Sounds so much like my own mom, who after graduating college and working her dream job had to quit to be a SAHM for our entire lives. My youngest brother is now 18 and she is trying to figure out her life. She is going to interior design school and looking for an internship, or part time job, or anything to keep her going. So proud of her, and your mom too. They are amazing human beings!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS!!!! Happy Birthday to your mom. My mom also worked hard to take care of and support me. Now that I'm going through my divorce I can't imagine what Id do without her. I hope my daughter can look back and feel the same about me one day. This is just beautiful.

ReplyDeleteShe sounds like an incredible woman. Your mom, I mean. Well, you sounds like a great woman, too. :)
And you both look beautiful.
P.S.: first time here - really nice blog
oh how incredibly sweet!
ReplyDeleteawwww.
ReplyDelete"She has continued to fiercely love and support Shane and I,making sure we never wanted for anything, helped us follow our passions": as remarkable as all her other achievements are, THAT is the one that tugged on my heart strings the most and probably the one she is most proud of. It is probably the reason WHY she worked hard at everything else, so that she could provide that life for you and Shane. I think that is the reason to work, to support the ones you love and the second you forget that that's what you're working for then your life gets out of balance and you let the things that matter most slip. Happy (belated) birthday, Meg's mom!
ReplyDeleteImmediately after posting that comment I realized I'd forgotten the most important thing to include, you obviously need to make "I Got it from my Mama" your theme song now.
ReplyDeletehappiest of birthdays to your mom. she clearly is a special lady to have raised such a great daughter
ReplyDeleteHappy (late) birthday to your mom! she sounds like an absolutely wonderful person

ReplyDeleteAwww, I know this comment is late but I like your mom a lot. :) Just let her know she's my hero (heroine sounds weird!), really!!! Her determination is more than just awesome!!! Kudos!!
ReplyDeleteAnd well, no wonder you're so great having such a fantastic role model as a mother!!!!
xoxo
Hi Meg! I'm a totally new reader, just came across this blog today ca 10 minutes ago through casual glamorous blog. I can't stop reading! This post about your mom made me teary eyed. I'm a mommie of two little girls, and 28. Living in Irvine CA (not so exciting) but I grew up in Sweden, also moved across the pond for my hubbs, Cali native. Anywho. Love your blog and will be back. Much love from me!
