Ceilidh (pronounced Kay-lee)
is traditional Irish/Scottish dancing..
and Stephen and I are about to take part in this fun tradition at a wedding tomorrow in Northern Ireland!
(yes we are going back to Northern Ireland tonight...a blog friend commented on my last NI post and said, "I love how you can casually say, 'We're going to fly up to Ireland..' as if you're going to a taco stand." ...and it is actually starting to feel that way..minus the tacos..and mexican food altogether)
I have been dieing to go to a ceilidh since I moved to Scotland,
so I was pretty pumped when Stephen's friend said she was having one at her wedding.
It's kind of like in the states when you go to a country western bar for some square dancing.
(I had to do square dancing at camp in fifth grade and I was PISSED I didn't get paired up with my crush..life is hard when you are eleven)

I found this video on youtube..it is sorta cheesy and hilarious.
But it gives you an idea of what a Ceilidh looks like.
Men are wearing kilts.
You'll love it.

Jon's parents do Scottish dancing for Burns Night every year and they join up with a bunch of friends a few months beforehand to take dancing classes... which may just be an excuse to drink, actually, now that I think about it... regardless, it sound like tons o' fun!
ReplyDeleteCeilidhs are such fun!! My boyfriend's brother had one for his wedding and it was so much better than a disco. Just be careful who you're matched with...I was flung around by a girl who knew was she was doing and thought I was going to fly across the dance floor!

Looks like a really crazy party.

I love traditional dances at weddings.
Looks like fun! It will tire you out I'm sure...

I went to one when I lived there - with all the spinning and such it's where I learned first hand exactly what men wear under kilts!
ReplyDeleteI studied up at Cambridge one summer, and my friends and I spent a weekend in Scotland...where we definitely went to a Ceilidh! SO MUCH FUN!!
ReplyDeleteA Ceilidh is the most fun you will EVER have. No lie.
ReplyDeleteLook for the guys in the kilts and the white socks and the little lace up shoes. They know what they're doing. And they'll make you look good, even if you have no idea what you're doing.
That looks like SO much fun! I've seen that in movies before and have always wanted to be somewhere you could do that dance! Have fun! Can't wait to hear about it!
ReplyDeleteI know about Ceilidh very well, growing up in an Irish/Scottish Family. It can be super entertaining sometimes! haha.
ReplyDeleteGlad you will ge to experiance it.

Oh my goodness this looks so fun. I'm completely jealous and am begging you to rig up a video camera of you doing this! Have a blast.
ReplyDeletePS - I linked to your blog today on mine in my "If you really knew me..." post!
Happy Wednesday xox
aw see things like this make me want to travel more and more and more!
ReplyDeletelooks so fun!!

xx
It looks like fun! It's great you're finally getting to try it!
ReplyDeletei love ceilidhs they are so much fun--a few weddings we have been to had them and they were amazing.
ReplyDeleteoh and you and stephen have to spin really fast to see if he can lift you off the ground.
Hahahaha! You know when people quote you and you're dying inside because you hear it in your voice and cringe? Haha! Thanks for the shout out!
ReplyDeleteSo, me and my Scottish friends looked EVERYWHERE for a Ceilidh while in Edinburgh but couldn't find one. I was so sad I never got to go. I'm so glad you're going, with your crush, nonetheless. Life is awesome when you're an adult.
Well, according to your other comments I must be the only one in the blogging world that hasn't ever heard of this dance! Nonetheless it looks absolutely awesome.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Irish words? All those seemingly extra letters? BEST LANGUAGE. But I would have had no idea how to pronounce Ceilidh so thanks :)
I'll be disappointed if photos of S in a kilt are not circulating the Internet soon.
ReplyDeleteAlso, why do american elementary school gym classes insist on square dancing as curriculum for a gym class? What does it teach, other than the fact that you will ALWAYS get paired with this smelly kid in life(and if your partner isn't the SK, it's probably you)? And it's always at the age when your limbs are all gangly. It's like putting roller skates on a herd of giraffe and sending them out to pasture.
I feel like I was always paired up with the overweight guy with sweaty hands. Always.
ReplyDeleteOh this looks like a blast. You're going to have such a great time!! Jealous! Take pictures!!!! :)

Oh my gosh I want to dance with men in kilts so badly, and I didn't realize I wanted to do this until...ten seconds ago.
ReplyDeletei really love that that word does NOT look like kay-lee in the slightest to my mind. and i really double love how much stinking FUN that looks!! throw in some drinks. oh my gosh. like, i would do that every weekend. i might start that up in my own house. well. once i'm not ridiculously pregnant.
ReplyDeleteKilts! Hooray. :) I am hoping there is a vlog when you return from the Ceilidh. Also, I like that word. ALSO,also... now this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_ADDVL7sco) is stuck in my head (and yes, I have seen them in concert. it was silly and sappy and so much fun)
ReplyDeleteHave a grand time!!! xoxo
This looks like so much fun! Can't wait to hear about it.
