The following are a few conversations I quickly jotted down so that I wouldn't forget..
*note: in the UK there isn't a single poisonous animal or creature, except for like, a bee, which doesn't really count, except they really do scare the life out of me and make me cry.
Stephen: I want to catch a lizard
Me: go for it
Stephen: are they poisonous?
Me: No babe.
Stephen: are you sure?
Me: Yes.
Stephen: its not like a gecko?
Me: uhm..no?
Stephen: hmm.
Stephen: Look at that spider!
Me: ew
Stephen: is it poisonous?
Me: i really don't know...
Stephen: I'm not going near it.
swimming in the pool:
Stephen: I want to see if i can hold my breath and swim to the other side of the pool without coming up for air
Me: go for it
Stephen: but i need to be able to open my eyes
Me: then open your eyes....
Stephen: i cant!
Me: why?
Stephen: can you do it?
Me: yes...
Stephen: and its safe?
Me: yes....what are you even talking about?
Stephen: well i don't know if the water is safe here...
Me: oh my god. seriously?
Driving in the car S is looking out the window:
Stephen: hmmm Baja fresh (pronounces the J as a J instead of an H sound)
Stephen: why arnt people walking on the sidewalks?
Me: because they are driving in their cars
**Stephen took the GRE while in California in Camarillo, i dropped him off and picked him up when it was over
Me: how was the test?
Stephen: it was good, i finished early.
Me: did you just wait outside? you could have gone somewhere
Stephen: well i started walking, but didn't know if it was safe where I was, and no one is on the sidewalks, so i felt insecure and weird walking down the street.
Me: there were coffee shops and places around the corner from you?
Stephen: yes but some of them were in Spanish or something and I didn't know if it was safe.
S: what's this?
Me: BBQ sauce
S: what's this?
Me: Sourdough bread
S: what's this?
Me: rye bread
(at grocery store)
Me: welcome to our cereal aisle
S: you guys have a problem
S: where are we going?
Me: to the bank, my mom has to get some cash
S: wait..why arnt we parking?
Me: its a drive through bank
S: (horrified look on face) you are joking me right now
Me: no...
S: this is just too far...(takes picture of drive through bank)
Me: BBQ sauce
S: what's this?
Me: Sourdough bread

That is hilarious! I love reading these "conversations", but I think these are my favorite!
ReplyDeleteBahahahahah.
ReplyDeleteGOLD!
And I, too, can't believe you guys have a drive-through bank...I mean, ZUH?! I'm in Australia and we have yet to get this service.
...though it sure would be handy!
baja. that made me lol. it's all so funny. rich, i say!
ReplyDeleteAh, these are really sweet, bless him!
ReplyDeleteThis is priceless. The last one is the best!
ReplyDeleteahahaha I love it! I definitely go through many moments like this with out of town visitors, both when I'm in Japan (with US visitors) and am Stateside (with Japanese visitors).
ReplyDeleteI also just had a conversation with another teacher at work today when he said he needed to put a "plaster" on his foot.
what, does he think america is one big crack den where people are getting shot in every city, every second? america can be peaceful too, stephen!
ReplyDeleteThese posts make me crack up! Sometimes I read them out loud to my husband just because I need someone to share the funnyness with lol. Hope you enjoyed your trip home!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, love it. I can't wait to go to the US, it just sounds so different from Australia. I wish we had everything drive-thru and unsafe Spanish cafes :(
ReplyDeleteHilarious!!
ReplyDeleteomg...because they are driving in their cars. keep them coming. this humor is the bane of my existence.
ReplyDeleteI kind of love that he took a picture of a drive-through bank. Hahaha.
ReplyDeletei die. laughing! these are hilarious! you two are adorable!
ReplyDeletexox
These quotes are hilarious! I was pretty excited the first time I saw a drive through bank too.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I cannot tell you how much I adore these conversations.Megan, you need to write a book. Not only is this hilarious, but you have such a way with knowing what's funny and writing it just right.
ReplyDeleteomg im in love! so cute, love the last one

ReplyDeletesoooo funnnyyy!! looove it!
ReplyDeletegahh whyy cant my bf be from a different country so we can have cute convos like this!
Bwahahaha!!!! I LOVE these! "welcome to our cereal aisle" "you guys have a problem"....I just about died...SO funny!
ReplyDeleteThese are seriously the best posts ever!!!
This one had me and my fiance cracking up! The cereal aisle and drive through bank were hilarious lines.
ReplyDeleteHaha a lot of this sounds familiar...I remember when the hubs saw his first drive through bank...he was horrified and then delighted! He still talks about it sometimes when we are standing in a forever line at our bank here...lol! Also the whole lack of "footpaths" thing. He was so bugged by it until he realized that its kinda hard to walk places as everything is so far away from each other!
ReplyDeleteI would be the American that would pronounce the 'J' in Baja Fresh.
ReplyDeleteIn my defense, there aren't any where I live.
The mental picture I have of him taking a photo of the bank drive-thru is amazing.
These are hilarious! I love the bank one, and the sidewalk fear!!
ReplyDeleteOne really naive, good natured "Yorkshire lad" I know once rode a bus- a BUS- through Compton. That story cracks me up every single time. And I make him tell it A LOT.
Oh, here's something about the poisonous animals: we moved here from Idaho, and I worked at a vet clinic there, so I saw many cases of rattlesnake bites. This freaked me out, and I rarely let our dogs leave our neighborhood. We move here, and I hear about adders, the only native venomous snake in Great Britain (yeah, there is ONE). I promptly re-start my freak out, and read up on how to stay away from them... turns out even dogs can wait up to three DAYS before seeking treatment. Needless to say, I don't worry about them anymore.
the cereal aisle was my favorite! Did he try any of the cereals??
ReplyDeleteBaja fresh! hahahaa
ReplyDeleteLoved it!
I love when you share things like this, they always crack me up. Stephen makes some hilarious comments!
ReplyDeletebest post ever!I love the atm one the most!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite installment of conversations yet!
ReplyDeletehahahah! these are hysterical. unsure about walking on sidewalks?! taking a pic of the drive-thru bank? hilarious.
ReplyDeletehaha, that was very amusing to read!
ReplyDeleteHaha!! These are hilarious!!!! I love that he didn't know if he should open his eyes in the water.
ReplyDeletebahahaha ok
ReplyDelete1. I've missed your blog more than I realized!
2. I need to experience the US through the eyes of someone who has never been here ASAP
3. If you two got any better looking, I'd hate you.... fortunately your personality makes up for that. Damn you! : )
CarissaExplainsItAll
This just made my day
ReplyDeletethis is hilarious- I love the bank comments!
ReplyDeleteHaha these are hilarious.
ReplyDeleteOMG. These make my life.
ReplyDeleteThis is too funny! No one walks on the sidewalks so he doesn't know if it's safe. I love your conversations.
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha omg I love how he feels that everything is dangerous here, and that's that you didn't even take him to the not so nice parts of LA. I've been catching up on all your California posts that I missed while I was away and I'm so glad you posted a conversation one. I went to England last week and brought my friend a box of Lucky Charms because she had only tried them once when she was 11 and went to Florida. When I gave her the box she smiled so much and was like, "I don't even understand how these are legal. We don't have any cereals with this much sugar!" we do have a cereal problem but I love it.
ReplyDeleteHYSTERICAL!!!! I especially love "Me: welcome to our cereal aisle
ReplyDeleteS: you guys have a problem"
It's true, but I don't fight it. I feed it.
i love how concerned he is about safety here! though it IS smart of him to question most anything... :)
ReplyDeleteHilarious! I love when you post your conversations, haha. My boyfriend and his parents were amazed by the drive through banks.. especially drive-in ATM machines.
ReplyDeleteDrive through banks--woah!
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of like a child discovering the world for the first time.
ReplyDeleteStraight up LOL'd through all of this. Love it. Baja.
ReplyDeleteis it safe? so funny. he must think you are badass or one tough cookie to have survived so long in such a dangerous (and poison filled) place like the US!
ReplyDeletejust peed my pants a little.
ReplyDelete"aaaah, baja fresh"
the egg out west.<a
poor stephen! he is in the safest place ever and he was worried! hahah These made me laugh so hard! Love it!
ReplyDeleteoh my god laughing hysterically right now!!!!! i love this!!!
ReplyDeleteI love these! I'm glad that you remember them, so that you can share them with us! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I want to tag along with someone experiencing our culture for the first time. That is so funny and yet we don't even think twice about any of it. Good thing you have him to keep you safe! ;)
ReplyDeleteha!!! poor steven, so scared for his safety in america!
ReplyDeleteCupcakesOMG!
So funny! Your conversation post always crack me up but this one is probably my favorite! The cereal aisle, haha! He's right, we do have a problem...but it's AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteHa ha! This reminds me so much of the conversations I've been told about from when my brother (English) first moved over to live with my (now) sister-in-law (native Cali)...
ReplyDeleteH-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S
I'm so glad he gave me the heads-up about the correct way to pronounce 'Baja', 'Paso Robles' and 'chipotle' before I went on my Californian adventure (yeah... random words, I know. Hey ho).
We really do have a cereal problem. Well spotted Stephen.
ReplyDeleteHAHAH This just has so much LOVE written all over it. Definitely made my morning a lot brighter! :) Oh S, how funny! <3
ReplyDeleteThis is the best conversation post yet!! Omg, the drive thru bank...lol..Stephen has almost convinced me that maybe we really do have a problem here in the US..hmm? haha
ReplyDeleteI am dying.
ReplyDeleteDYING.
is it safe?
Ah...the wonderful world of our cereal aisle! It really is a problem. But suchhhh a great problem. Love these posts
ReplyDeletedying. "what's this?" ahahahahahah <3 stephen
ReplyDeleteLOL I relate to Stephen in every single comment he's made! If my husband had a blog, you and him could share some of the silly things I've said so far.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to bi-cultural relationships! I feel like the other couples are missing out on all this awesomeness.
aww ...loving every bit of the conversation. following you. visit me some time.
ReplyDeletexoxo

i need to get me one of these.
ReplyDeleteI just snorted laughing at this while at Starbucks. Thank god there was a french version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" playing loud enough to cover me.
ReplyDeleteahahhaha, hilarious.
ReplyDeletebut all jesting aside. a drive-through-bank?!!
seriously? that's insane.
and quite reasonable in this unsafe place called the us.
love it.
haha...love the cereal convo!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely dying. so so funny. Is it safe??
ReplyDeleteThese are brilliant.
ReplyDelete"this is just too far"
hahaha
hahahaha, this really made me laugh! But a drive through bank? Seriously? :D
ReplyDeleteI love that EVERYTHING in the states warrants caution for him!
ReplyDeletehaha! oh wow these are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI die laughing!!! This is so awesome to see someone else's perspective! The missing people on the sidewalks is hilarious! I am sure the conversations with his friends back home are even more interesting as he describes Cali. :) thanks for sharing luv!
ReplyDeleteThese are the best ones yet. "Some of them were in Spanish" - welcome to America
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness.... I am laughing out loud!! That was so funny / sweet / cute / precious / hilarious. If you guys had a reality TV show, I would watch it.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is from London and this entire post made me laugh. I can relate!!! Although, ours is more of a language thing since he was here for a few years before we met. He uses a lot of slang, and he uses some words incorrectly because they have a slightly different meaning in England. It's hilarious, and so is this post!!
ReplyDeleteThe Blue Hour
Lolled the whole way through this! Although I'm impressed Stephen called them 'sidewalks'. Being Irish as well, I've never heard any Irish person I know say sidewalk - it's always 'footpath'. And in his defense, I'd be impressed with a drive through bank as well! Most we have is drive through MacDonalds or KFC
ReplyDeleteI was actually giggling at my desk reading these. One of my co-workers is engaged to a Brit, and we are constantly talking about the differences between the UK and here. These convos are too funny though....my favorite is the last tho....we are a lazy bunch we Yanks.
ReplyDeletehaha. stephen is a little overly concerned for his safety i would say. and he's hilarious. wish i could have witnessed a first american experience with him.
ReplyDelete...OH WAIT. i did. margaritas baby.
Hahaha the ba-ja pronunciation had me rolling on the floor! Thanks, Stephen!! ;P
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw this post title I clicked it! I love these!
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw this post title I clicked it! I love these!
ReplyDeleteHaha this is such a wonderful episode of conversations. His US experiences/observations are perfection.
ReplyDeleteThis is pure gold! haha
ReplyDeleteHahaha! I am dying! This is hilarious! Baja fresh is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteBEST conversations ever. Just wait til' y'all come to Austin. He's in for a REAL treat. Love you.
ReplyDeletehahaha, this has to be the best post of your conversations BY FAR!!
ReplyDeleteI have too many favorites. Love it love it love it all!!
Emily at Amazing Grapes
These Conversation posts never fail to make my day! I always laugh out loud reading them!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh these always make me laugh so hard. My favorite is him taking the picture of the drive through bank. I guess they don't have those there? That's awesome. Please post more soon!
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud at that last one! A picture of a drive through bank? And the cereal aisle... he's right about that.
ReplyDeleteBa-jaaaaa fresh.
ReplyDeleteHahaha!
Cheers.
Wait, the US has drive thru banks!? That's insane!
ReplyDeleteI think it'd be amusing to visit another country, just for the difference in culture. I mean, I live in Australia & it was quite different in ways when I went and visited New Zealand, and that's right next door.
I think with Stephens reactions, you'd never get him to Australia as nearly every 3rd animal is dangerous here :P Though I admit I laughed at the opening eyes in the water comment. These posts always amuse me!
Converstation posts are my favorite. They crack me up.
ReplyDeleteoh i would have loved seeing all of this. glad you jotted it down. and yes we do have a problem with cereal. lol
ReplyDeleteand bbq sauce. lol
and the j pronounced as an h.
thanks for making me laugh out loud and scare my neighbors! ;)
xoxo

ReplyDeleteI just died laughing at the cereal and bank convos! That's hilarious!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness I laughed out loud this whole post! You two are so cute. I'm glad you're getting him all American-ized :)
ReplyDeleteLaughing my butt off over here. You two are crazyy! Love this so much.
ReplyDeleteThese are so so so great! Who new drive through banking wasn't the norm. I hope Stephen thought the GRE was super ease 'cause I'm thinking about hitting that up.
ReplyDeleteLOL I was cracking up reading your post (I just discovered you btw) - it reminds me so much of myself when I moved to the US from Germany 18 years ago and of my German friends when they come to visit! Nowadays I feel very proud when I can giggle at their funny comments and looks and explain everything to them :)
ReplyDeletei can't even begin to tell you how much i love theses posts. so freaking funny!
ReplyDeleteoh my god, i love you so much. and stephen. i love you both. and california is kind of scary I guess if you come from a land with no poisonous animals and no BBQ sauce (and limited cereal selection?)
ReplyDeletehahahahahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteThis. is. AMAZING.
This is the second time ive read this and im laughing all over again. Hahah not sure if its safe.. Toooo funny!
