Airplane

sweater: H&M; necklace c/o Barberry and Lace

blouse: Zara; necklace: c/o Barberry and Lace

I received this necklace in the mail a couple of days ago from Barberry and Lace..
my new favorite little vintage jewelry shop on etsy.
I have worn the necklace every day since i got it...
and I don't just love it because it matches my blog..
I love it because every time I look at the little plane,
it reminds me of home..
my travels..
where I've come from..
and where I am going to.

I have been getting a bit home sick lately..
for the climate,
the food,
and most importantly,
my car.

I really don't like public transportation..
and as much as everyone said I would adjust,
I'm over a year in and I hate it even more.
I like being able to step outside my front door and into my car..
and then being able to get to wherever I need to go without walking a mile or two to the sub or bus or train...
(lets be honest I just hate walking)
or planning around arrival times,
or making sure i have cash or change.
I like not having to worry about how many layers ill need to wear to walk to the store..
I miss having my portable closet.
I miss knowing where I am going..
I know it seems like such a materialistic thing to miss..

but I miss the freedom my car represents.

sometimes.
I just miss home.
and sometimes I miss a cheesy gordita crunch and double decker taco.

  1. if i could fed-ex you some taco bell, i'd be all over that, girl. maybe this means it's time to take a little vacay back to the states except this time you could visit the east coast? :)

  2. YAY!! I'm SO glad you love your necklace... and that it reminds you of home! Oh, and it looks great with that yellow sweater... nice choice!! ;)

  3. Oh my gosh I'm totally the opposite! I LOVED not having a car in NYC and I find it so frustrating to have to DRIVE everywhere here in San Francisco. Whenever I can I skip the car and walk or public transport it!

  4. Now I have the airplane song by I believe the Chilli Peppers in my head. I'm totally with you on the public transportation thing-- I stayed in Boston once and couldn't fathom how people did their grocery shopping when they didn't own cars.

  5. I'm with you, I love to travel but I hate the airports and the hassle...the necklace is adorable, great etsy shop she has!

  6. I don't think I would enjoy walking in that kind of cold at all and I know I definitely take my 'hop in the car, go anywhere I want' for granted often times.

You know, you should totally make your own double crunch taco. Think about it, hard shell, w/soft tortilla w/beans in it. Fold over hard, then add beef, beans, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce...and whatever else. Bam! you have your own.

Yes? No? Did I just waste my time typing all that out??

  7. um, i'm obsessed with that necklace. checking out the shop now.

and i think i need to send americana care package to scotland !

  8. Here's the worst thing about public transportation: the creepers, the smell, the fact that you literally have to pack everything you own, because if you forget something there's no turning back.
    And basically everything else.

Poor, poor girl. Really. I feel your pain.

  9. aw, i'm sure your car misses you, too!

and that necklace is the cutest. and also i looked in that shop and everything in there is the cutest!

  10. I know what you mean!! I'm studying abroad in Milan right now--and I definitely miss driving. Plus, my singing skills are probably diminishing, since I can't practice belting out my favorite songs on the way to school. The walls are just too thin here to make my neighbors endure that.

P.S. I love that necklace. And if you don't mind, I'm purchasing it :)

  11. Love it! I wish I could come visit you and bring you TONS of Taco Bell.

  12. I love my car too... I lived in DC for two years and really didn't like public transportation either... I never really got used to it (there were lots of smelly people :( )!

Also... I love me some T Bell!

Hope you are having/had a great Tuesday! XOXO, Stephanie @ Blonde Highlights

  13. We've all had those home-away-from-home moments. I remember one night of living in Africa, I cried while listening to a Josh Groban song and eating a fake piece of chocolate. Taco Bell was definitely on my miss-list too. I think you need some Oregon treats to cheer you up:-) xoxo

  14. amen, sister! i started out loving public transporation. streetcars! trains! germany at my fingertips. then i waited 3 months. i broke up with my love of transportation one frigid night in the middle of february. i missed my connecting train. it was 2 am. the next train wasn't until 4. the train station was closed. i stood in the elevator with the other poor stranded girl to try to keep warm. i miss having a car ::sob::

also, taco bell is ALWAYS the first food stop after leaving the airport in the states. always. get with the program, europe!

  16. When I lived in London, much as I loved it, I did have the homesick moments. And what would I do? Go to Starbucks. It felt like home, consistent no matter which country I was in. It was always a nice little pick-me-up, reminding me of my life in SoCal (now if only there had been a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf... Or In N Out)

  17. I totally get the car thing. I'm in the process of selling mine and feel like I'm going to throw up!

  18. love the necklace and I'm totally with ya on public transportation. Except I think public transportation in Europe is a million times better than in America. Seriously, A MILLION TIMES BETTER. Public transportation here sucks.

  19. I am so sorry. :( I hope you feel better soon. That necklace should sure help. If I could send you a taco without it getting gross- I totally would!

  20. that necklace is fabulous :) I'm glad it makes you think of home & your travels!! Even though that brings more home sickness...so sorry about that...I think I take for granted having a car. Thanks for reminding me, I'm going to be more grateful for it! :) How much longer do you have in Europe?

and oh girl...now I'm craving a gordita...I've never had a cheesy gordita crunch though. sounds amazing!

  21. balls. i just left a comment and it didn't go thru. anyways i was saying i totally agree with u. when i lived in nyc i haaaated the subway even though everyone loved it. i realized when i moved back home after 8 months that i hadn't sang the whole time. car time is your only alone time when you can sing at the top of your lungs. amen.

  22. Public transportation really sucks, but just look up gas prices in the US and it should make you feel a little bit better. It's. So. Freaking. Expensive. I might have to sell my left kidney if it doesn't come down soon.

  25. If I could Fedex you a gordita and double decker, I would. Btw, I just realized that you are studying neuroscience. A girl after my own heart. I love science with all my being. If I weren't married and on my way to being a mommy, I would totally be a research virologist. Microbes RUUULE!

  28. I remember when I lived in France I would get homesick for my car.
& ranch.. I may or may have not have my mother ship me some ranch and pinto beans. random.. I know.

I love this necklace--is it on the website yet?
I searched around a bit, but could not find it.

    LOVE YOUR BLOG :)
    such an inspiration.

  29. I have no room to complain, considering I was only in NYC for the summer. But I'm glad to hear of someone else doesn't like public transportation! I was singing praises the day I got back into my car!

Also, I love that necklace. You rock it girl!

  30. I couldn't survive without Taco Bell. And Mexican.

    ReplyDelete
  31. if i could send you a gordita and it wouldn't be gross by the time it got there...i would! the worst for me would be having to have the cash on you. it's like finding yourself on the toll road in the OC and realizing you don't have the exact change and you're gonna get a huge ticket cause you sure as hell can't reverse off the road...although, you're think about it. ugh.

  32. i certainly take my car for granted! but when i don't have it it is the worst thing in the world. i would trade spots with you if i could, just for a little! i have a taco bell near my house :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, I totally feel ya. I don't have a car either and most of the time rely on my husband/ the bus to take me to places. It's tough! I miss the time I had a car. =/

  34. That is a lovely necklace and perfect for you this year!

I hate public transit too. We have a marta here in the atl that makes me want to take a shower every time I ride it. And I always witness the most fascinating things happen...

  35. Aww *hugs* - home sickeness is the worst. And it's not horrible, I would miss my car so much.

  37. I just found your blog today, but I can TOTALLY relate. I am living in Japan with no tacos and lived through the public transport phase (I bought a car because I was so tired of it) Hang in there! I hope today is better for you.

  38. I can relate to what you mean. As much fun as traveling and the amazing experiences it brings, nothing is ever as comforting and restful as home. I'm happy whenever I land back in my old city, eat mom's awesome food, hang out in my favorite local spots with friends.

  40. Hi Megan, I just stumbled across your blog and I must admit I am one of those creepy blog stalkers, (ok I admitted it up front). I recently moved to Durham, England with my adorable husband from Durham, NC (originally from Atlanta). So I feel like I can relate. Also, we purchased a car...an automatic car, so if your ever in Durham let me know! Until then, wear lots of layers, always carry and umbrella and try not to freeze!

  41. Lovely necklace. So sorry you are homesick. Feel better and layer up and try to stay warm.

  43. well it sounds like you are due for a trip home to visit your fam. Are you going home for christmas at all? and bringing your man candy? If so, you should arrange a lengthy layover in an airport near me so I can drive to, say, chicago and come visit you.!

    ah, dreams..

  44. That necklace is way cute! And you're a trooper for living far away from home for so long. Not having a car is also not an option in life. Public transportation can be charming only for so long until the armpity subway odor gets to you.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I hope your home-sickness passes. That you can find joy where you are! It's tough, i'm sure. You can do it though! You're a rockstar.

  46. I love it! So subtle. And love that white blouse. Gorg!

  47. Would you be upset if I copied you and got this necklace??? I LOVE IT!

I know what you mean about being homesick - this time of year I always start to get anxious to go home and visit during December :/ Wish you were going to be there when I'm back so that we could meet up and be real friends :)

    Hope you feel better!

  54. That necklace is so cute. I'm pretty terrified of flying, but I've always thought pretty little airplane toys are fun. I knew this girl who had a really simple airplane tattoo on her foot and I used to think it was so cool.

  55. LOVE the necklace!! and i love what it represents for you. my dad is a pilot, and he is my hero, so i might just have to hunt that little necklace down for me too! xoxo
